Dr. Sin Yee Elaine Yap, is making headlines as a sensational young pianist in her home, Malaysia and being described as a young artist who “took all musical considerations in the stride” (The Straits Times, Singapore). She has been selected as the winner of Michigan State University Piano Concerto Competition (2019), one of the winners of New England Conservatory’s Marion Rubin Berman 31’ Piano Honors Competition (2017) and performed at the New England Conservatory Jordan Hall. She also won fourth prize at the 5th Thailand International Piano Competition (2018), and first prize at the Singapore National Piano and Violin Competition (Artist Category, 2013).
She has performed in countries including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan and Netherlands, United States and also collaborated with orchestras: Michigan State University Symphony Orchestra, Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center (klpac) Orchestra, Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, Singapore Metropolitan Festival Orchestra and Penang Philharmonic Orchestra. For chamber music, she worked with James Campbell, Gary Hoffman, Nicola Boud, Pei-Shan Lee, Vivian-Hornik Weilerstein, Max Levinson and Lucy Chapman. She also performed for renowned artists in masterclasses, including Dang Thai Son, Elisso Virsaladze, Mikhail Voskresensky, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Stephen Hough, Gottlieb Wallisch, Konstantin Scherbakov, Jerome Lowenthal, Ann Schein, Lisa Smirnova, Martin Roscoe etc.
Dr. Yap, is currently a piano faculty member at the University Putra Malaysia. She received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance at Michigan State University in the United States, studying with Margarita Shevchenko. Prior to that, she studied at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music for a Bachelor degree, and completed graduate studies and a diploma at the New England Conservatory in Boston. Her previous teachers include Haesun Paik, Meng-Chieh Liu, Albert Tiu and Dr. Nicholas Ong.
