Bachfest Malaysia 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner & Concert

The Kuala Lumpur And Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH), Kuala Lumpur

Born in 1978, the Austrian tenor is one of the most sought-after Evangelists and Bach interpreters of his generation. He studied church music as well as vocal arts with Margit Klaushofer and Robert Holl in Vienna. Mr. Johannsen participated in master classes with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Nicolai Gedda and Christa Ludwig and was a prizewinner at the Bach, Schumann, Mozart, Hilde Zadek and Wigmore Hall Competitions.

Since his debut in 1998, appearances as a concert, lieder and opera singer have taken him to the major musical centres of Europe (Vienna Musikverein, Berlin Philharmonie), North America (Carnegie Hall, New York; Maison Symphonique de Montréal), Japan and the Middle East, where he sings works from every period. He appears at leading festivals (Styriarte Festival Graz, George Enescu Festival Bucharest, Heidelberger Frühling, yearly at international Bach festivals), and he has been performing under such distinguished conductors as Sir Neville Marriner, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Trevor Pinnock and Philippe Herreweghe with various ensembles, including Vienna Philharmonic, Freiburger Barockorchester and Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. Daniel Johannsen is a regular participant at today’s most important Bach cantata projects (J.S. Bach Foundation St. Gallen, All of Bach).

The lyric tenor is engaged by such theatres as the Münchner Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, the Leipzig Opera, the Vienna Volksoper and the Bonn Opera, where he is heard in Mozart roles, Baroque, 20th-century and contemporary works as well as several operetta roles.

Song recitals featuring the entire range of German repertoire, in addition to English and French compositions, are a central focus in the work of the singer, who collaborates with such pianists as Graham Johnson, Kristian Bezuidenhout, Helmut Deutsch and Charles Spencer. His solo albums 360° Hugo Wolf (with Andreas Fröschl), Wiener Melange (with Matthias Krampe) and Lieder ohnegleichen (Schubert songs with Christoph Hammer) were highly acclaimed by several Austrian and German radio programs as well as by the trade press. In addition, numerous other recordings, radio and television broadcasts document his creative output.

In the 2024-25 season, Mr. Johannsen was participating in a concert series for the Netherlands Bach Society under the baton of Lars Ulrik Mortensen. He gave his debuts as Male Chorus in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia in Freiburg as well as Johannes in Franz Schmidt’s oratorio Das Buch mit Sieben Siegeln at Berliner Philharmonie. Concerts with Hans-Christoph Rademann took him to Stuttgarter Liederhalle and Hamburger Elbphilharmonie. His recent NAXOS recording of Erich J. Wolff songs was nominated for the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik.

Daniel Johannsen

Pianist and Composer Ng Chong Lim has performed both as a soloist and chamber musician in many international festivals including The 3rd Asian Grand Piano Concert in Seoul, “Evmelia” International Music Festival in Greece, 2014 “21st New Music Festival” in Almaty, Kazakhstan, 2018 International Taipei Piano Maestro Festival, 2019 Perugia Music Festival in Italy, and 2022 concerto performance with Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. He has served as juror of international competitions, such as The 5th 6th and 7th ASEAN International Chopin Piano Competition in Malaysia, The Jakarta International Piano Competition, and 2019 & 2020 Singapore International Piano Competition. He holds degrees from the Royal College of Music (RCM), London and the Universitat fur Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz, Austria.

鋼琴家與作曲家黃仲林以獨奏者及重奏身份活躍予各個國際音樂活動，其中包括在首爾舉辦的第三屆亞洲鋼琴音樂節，希臘的”Evmelia”國際音樂節，在哈薩克斯坦·阿拉木圖舉辦的第21屆新音樂節，台北國際大師鋼琴藝術節，以及義大利佩魯賈音樂節。他於 2022年與馬來西亞愛樂樂團合作演出。仲林也曾擔任許多國際鋼琴比賽評委，如於馬來西亞舉辦的第五，六及第七屆蕭邦國際鋼琴比賽，印尼雅加達舉辦的國際鋼琴比賽以及2019年與2020年在新加坡舉辦的國際鋼琴大賽。他於2011年受馬來西亞森美蘭州最高統治者嚴端封為STM（Setiawan Tuanku Muhriz 獎章-Associate-Order of Loyalty to Tuanku Muhriz) ，以表揚他在馬來西亞音樂界所作出許多貢獻。他的母校包括英國皇家音樂學院(RCM)以及奧地利的格拉茨音樂與表演藝術大學。

Ng Chong Lim

Violinist Khai Ern Ooi is a member of the Royal Swedish Orchestra, and the only Southeast Asian throughout its history of almost 500 years. She has performed in the position of co-principal of the second violins in the Royal Swedish Orchestra, as well as with the symphony orchestras of Norrköping and Gothenburg. In Malaysia, she serves as the concertmaster of the Malaysia Bach Festival Orchestra, and performs regularly with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. She was previously a core member of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra in Japan and the Assistant Concertmaster of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. 

Khai Ern has performed in major festivals such as Lucerne, Salzburg, and Spoleto USA, and in venues like Carnegie Hall in New York, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Royal Albert Hall in London, under the direction of many eminent conductors, including Alan Gilbert, Sir Neville Marriner, Pierre Boulez and Lorin Maazel. She has performed in concert tours throughout Japan, Europe, and Malaysia. Khai Ern was also the only Malaysian representative in both the Aldeburgh World Orchestra and the Commonwealth Strings Project, ensembles that were put together in conjunction with the 2012 London Olympics and the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games respectively. 

Highlights of 2024 include a concert tour of Germany in June, especially at Bachfest Leipzig, as the Concertmaster of the Malaysia Bach Festival Orchestra; a tour concert at Taichung, Taiwan in July, with Ensemble Virama and esteemed trumpeter Hou Chuan-An; and performing the Mendelssohn Concerto with the National Symphony Orchestra of Malaysia as soloist. Khai Ern is also a recent recipient of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music’s Sten Frykberg Memorial Fund Scholarship and the Royal Swedish Opera’s Kurt Bendix Fund Scholarship.

Khai Ern earned undergraduate and master degrees at Indiana University, where she studied violin with Federico Agostini and Mark Kaplan, and chamber music with Atar Arad and the Orion String Quartet.

Tay Cher Siang started his piano lessons learning classical music. He took up an interest in Jazz during his teenage years and began to pursue his musical journey as a jazz pianist. He received his Masters in Jazz Pedagogy under the tutelage of Dr. Miltenberger and Professor Scea.

Tay immerse himself in the education of Jazz in Malaysia and Asia, he taught at UCSI, UM, The Yamaha Music Academy and UPM. He is also teaching at his private studio, and giving master classes, jazz clinics throughout Malaysia and Asia.

As a pianist and composer, Tay has been touring extensively with his band WVC –Malaysian Jazz Ensemble, and also with a multi nationals band Unit Asia, to China, Taiwan, Macau, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, Turkey, Egypt, India, Italy, Germany, Spain, and the USA. Total of ten albums were released throughout the Years, with original compositions and arrangements. Tay is also active in producing recordings with various artists and singers in the region. He has produced 38 albums to date.

In 2016, Tay won three Kaki Seni-Cameronian Arts Awards, the most prestigious awards for Performing Arts in Malaysia, for his compositions and performances. Another nomination came in 2020, for his production of Shakespeare and Jazz concerts of which he bagged the best original composition award. He is invited to give a TedX talk at the prestigious 2018 TedX Petaling Street, and then perform with his band at the said event. In 2023, Tay was invited to be the Artist-in-Residence at the UCSi Music Department. Tay is also the music director and arranger for various notable Singers and musical acts in the Malaysian live music scene.

As a composer and music director, Tay has been involved with movie soundtracks, Musical productions, and Theater works. He and his band played themselves in the Hollywood blockbuster “Crazy Rich Asians”. 

Tay is currently the Chairman of the organizing committee of the annual Malaysian Jazz Piano Festivals. He also writes a bi-weekly Jazz Column on newspaper China Press and Sinchew Daily,, and he hosts a weekly Jazz radio program on City Plus FM. Tay has also curated music programs for live music venues such as The Venue, Royal Selangor and Titi Jazz & Music.

Cher Siang Tay

David Chin is the founder and Artistic Director of Bachfest Malaysia and the conductor of the acclaimed Malaysia Bach Festival Singers and Orchestra. In 2022, he was named a Senior Fellow of the prestigious Bach-Archiv Leipzig in Germany, becoming only the fourth person to receive this honor since the institution’s founding in 1950. He currently serves as a Long-term Visiting Professor of Music at Augustana University in the United States, where he directs the inaugural Augustana Bach Collegium and Bach Cantata Lecture Concert Series, conducts various ensembles, and teaches conducting and music history.

David’s will be conducting the Malaysia Bach Festival Singers and Orchestra in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion at the first International Bachfest Malaysia 2025. He recently conducted Emmanuel Music Boston in a performance of Bach's Easter Cantata and the Augustana Bach Collegium in Bach’s St. John Passion, led a concert tour of Beethoven’s Missa solemnis across major cities in East Malaysia, and conducted a performance of Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity in New York City. He also led the Malaysia Bach Festival Singers and Orchestra on a concert tour in Germany, performing at iconic Bach landmarks, including the St. Thomas Church during the prestigious Bachfest Leipzig. Their performances garnered widespread critical acclaim, earning rave reviews from the Leipziger Volkszeitung, which prominently featured David in its headline.

David Chin has conducted choirs and orchestras worldwide, leading performances of major works by composers spanning from the Renaissance to the 21st century. His repertoire includes everything from world premieres and a cappella pieces to choral-orchestral masterworks, as well as vocal jazz and Broadway musicals. His musical engagements have taken him across the United States, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, and Italy, where he has both performed and taught.

David is equally active in the fields of education and musicology. He has served as Director of Choral Activities and Music Professor at multiple universities in the United States, and his conducting students have been admitted to graduate programs at prominent institutions. He recently presented papers and lectures at the American Bach Society in Philadelphia, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory in Singapore, UCSI University in Malaysia, and Silpakron University in Thailand. He is currently the music committee advisor of the National Chinese Independent High Schools in Malaysia, where he writes for the music textbook, and trains music teachers throughout the nation. Through Bachfest Malaysia, David organized the Mr. Bach children and family concert series in 2023 and 2024, blending education and entertainment to inspire young audiences. In 2025, he launches the inaugural Southeast Asia Bach Competition, aiming to broaden the appreciation of Bach’s music and showcase exceptional talent from across the region.

David is also a published author, which includes his Chinese translation of world-renowned German Bach scholar Michael Maul’s Bach: A Pictorial Biography from German into Chinese, his children’s book A Day in the Life of Bach, and co-authorship on Bach: His Musical and Philosophical World, published by Shanghai’s People Publishing House. David produced Encountering Bach, a documentary film on the life and music of J.S. Bach, which was filmed exclusively in Germany. It is available in both English and Mandarin versions, and has drawn a large viewership from across the globe. 


David holds both Master’s and Doctoral degrees in conducting from the Eastman School of Music, where he received full scholarships to pursue both degrees. He was also awarded the prestigious Harvey Fellowship by the Mustard Seed Foundation in 2015, and the Burton Fellowship Awards for German Studies in Germany in 2017.

Bachfest Malaysia was founded by Artistic Director David Chin in 2015. Its inaugural performance was the Malaysian premiere of St. John Passion by the Malaysia Bach Festival Singers and Orchestra. Since then, they have performed Mass in B minor, St. Matthew Passion, numerous cantatas, motets, and instrumental works by Johann Sebastian Bach. They recently performed several Bach cantatas and motets at the St. Thomas Church during the renowned international Bachfest Leipzig in Germany, and received raving reviews and extended standing ovation. They also performed at the St. George’s Church in Eisenach and the Bach Church in Arnstadt. 

In their home country, the Malaysia Bach Festival Singers and Orchestra have performed in Kuala Lumpur, Muar, George Town, Sibu, Bintulu, and Kota Kinabalu. Their performances of Bach's music have been repeatedly recognized at the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards, winning "Best of 2019" and "Best Choral Ensemble Performance" for St. Matthew Passion in 2020, and "Best Ensemble Performance" for "Prelude" from Orchestral Suite in C in 2019. That same year, David Chin's performance of Bach's Harpsichord Concerto in D major also received "Best Solo Instrumental Performance”. 

Bachfest Malaysia has been creating excellent music-making opportunities for young local talents. Malaysia Bach Festival Singers and Orchestra consists some of the best musicians in the country, which include leaders and principals from prominent ensembles such as the National Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Virama, Young Choral Academy, KL City Opera, Wicked Music People, VerSes, YinQi Choir, Klpac Orchestra, to name a few. Apart from the music of J.S. Bach, they have also performed works by composers such as Byrd, Victoria, Mozart, Vaughan Williams, and Dan Forrest, as well as a new commission by Malaysian composer Caeleb Tee.
