This fun, relaxing practice helps us to connect more closely with nature, and results in the creation of our own unique nature journal. Both the practice and the end product are important. The practice improves our recognition of different animal and plant species, and our understanding of where and how they live. With time, it also improves our ability to observe, to draw and to write. A journal allows us to capture the moment (a sunset, a view, a critter, a flower, a fungus…) and recall observations which would otherwise be forgotten. The entries in our journal can give us inspiration for other creative projects, such as writing, painting, textiles, music, other craft, and so on. A nature journal can also be used to compile species sightings and other more scientific observations that are of great value to citizen science projects.
What to expect?
How nature journaling helps us observe and connect with place with curiousity and wonder. The evolving terrain along the Klang River and its surrounding ecosystems. Personal reflections on landscape, memory, and environmental change. Throughout this session, we will do a scavenger hunt, find a few small objects that strongly represent this place at present moment, draw, and describe these into our journal (with words, pictures, and numbers). We can add a landscapito(s) sketching or diagram to complete our story. By combining the small found objects with the big picture, we can capture the mystery and memories of this special place along the river. Chow Keng Fatt, Joshua, a native of Bentong, Pahang is an avid nature journal, enthused in connecting (or, reconnecting) people from all walks of life to nature especially in urban settings with sketching, writing and numbers. An ordinary yet passionate in sharing our homeland through nature journal in creating sense of place in our society.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own sketchbooks, supplies, and picnic mats/seats, insect repellent, hat, sunscreen, water as the sessions will take place outdoors in nature 🌿🍃
