[Last chance to catch KAKUREGA with four more additional performances on July 28 + 29!]
“If non-artists escape by indulging in the works of artists, where do artists go if they need to escape?”
KAKUREGA, Japanese for “hideout”, explores the anxieties that several artists face as they deal with the pressure to create. As they pause and hide momentarily in their respective hideouts, they reflect on their craft, reexamine their sense of purpose, deal with their inner conflicts, and figure a way out. Will they succeed and return to creation, or will they go down the rabbit hole further?
This intimate and immersive project invites audiences to track the journey of these artists simmering in their hideouts. KAKUREGA pieces together text, movement, lights, projections, and sound to transport audiences into different spatial dimensions. Audiences may choose to engage with and participate in these environments.
From the Director
“At this point, it’s impossible to decide whether hiding or creating feels better. I’m obsessed with both. The cycle repeats itself, enough to make me leave my hideout not remembering anything. There is also a blurred line between creating and hiding where both can happen concurrently. To navigate through these clashes is something I still struggle with and loathe. Devising KAKUREGA makes me want to crawl into my hideout and never come out again (haha). ”
Content Warning
KAKUREGA uses loud sounds, bright lights & blackouts. Real food is served, although audiences can opt from being served by letting our front-of-house personnel know. Audience discretion is advised. For mature audiences.
