Transitional Cinema presents "In Between: A Transitional Cinema Short Film Screening"

Transitional Cinema is a response to the changes Malaysia underwent from 2018 to 2020 where the country was thrusted from "New Malaysia" into the "New Normal" almost immediately. This state of being in between and adapting to the shifts - the despair, the nostalgia, and the tenacity to move forward is captured by a series of short films with the support of Finas and the Krishen Jit Fund.

Ah Ma by Chew Boon Wai (15 minutes) - Winner, Best Cinematography & Best Actress, BMW Shorties 2023.

An elderly Chinese woman living alone in a village prepares for the Qing Ming festival. The grief of losing her husband parallels the pain of missing her grandson who had left to work in the city.

Mind frame by Andy Darrel Gomes (17 minutes) - Winner, Jury Award, BMW Shorties 2022.

A film lecturer visits his depressed student and participates in the reading of the young man's latest script. The lines between reality and fiction starts to blur.

A Worm, Whatever Will Be Will Be (12 minutes) - Official Selection, Golden Horse Film Festival Taipei, 2022.

Not knowing that it’s the final months for her dementia-ridden grandmother, director Lai documents her grandmother’s physical changes and her belief that worms are living under her skin. Later a hometown trip confronts her with truths on ageing, change and mortality.

Fish Balls by Anwar Johari Ho (15 minutes) - Winner, Jury Special Citation, Ngilngig Asian Film Festival Philippines, 2024.

A man's genitals are transforming into a snakehead fish. Unable to escape his voyeuristic past, he struggles between the fine line of his humanity and animalistic nature.

The screening is supported by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Sunway University.
