MYBody: Malaysian Choreographers’ Showcase

Six renowned Malaysian choreographers present brand-new solo works, using the body as a medium to reflect on personal and social issues through diverse artistic perspectives. These six distinct works offer varied perspectives on the body and its role in navigating self, society, and existence through the lens of contemporary Malaysian aesthetics.

MYBody is a newly launched special segment that highlights the creative voices and physical expressions of local dance artists, offering an artistic feast rich in thought and movement language. This year, six acclaimed Malaysian choreographers—renowned both locally and internationally—have been specially invited to each present a unique solo work that reflects their individual artistic vision:

Amy Len – Elephant in the room
Fauzi Amirudin – Imprint
Joseph Victor Gonzales – The elephant in the room
Rathimalar Govindarajoo – REM
Suhaili Micheline – In this Flesh: A Witness
*Ong Tze Shen – The Progress of a Progressive Solo

*Ong Tze Shen, Principal Dancer of the Hong Kong Dance Company, appears with the kind permission of the Hong Kong Dance Company.

Joseph Victor Gonzales’ “The Elephant in the Room” draws from his own artistic journey to confront the evolving body of the dancer and society’s taboos, questioning the limits of capability and relevance. Suhaili Micheline’s “In This Flesh: A Witness” transforms unspeakable grief into raw movement, responding to the trauma of war and the weight of memory. Rathimalar Govindarajoo’s “REM” navigates the blurred lines between dream and reality, layering classical Indian elements with the language of the body to explore how memory and time fold within the subconscious. Amy Len’s “Elephant in the Room” addresses the metaphorical “elephants” society chooses to ignore, using silent gestures to confront what remains unspoken. Fauzi Amirudin’s “Imprint” paints the body as a quiet landscape, tracing unseen legacies and the imprints of the past in a silent dialogue between history and the present. Finally, Ong Tze Shen’s “The progress of a progressive solo” reflects on the tension between technique and authenticity, drawing inspiration from Rauschenberg’s Erased de Kooning to question performance, perception, and self-worth through acts of erasure. Together, these six distinct works offer varied perspectives on the body and its role in navigating self, society, and existence through the lens of contemporary Malaysian aesthetics.
