Bengkel Kenduri Suara

A unique, all-day participatory translation workshop hosted by a collective of theatre artists.

We will be hosting a 'translation party' for members of the public on 8 October in KL. Come and join our search for a Voice in Bahasa for a Chinese-Malaysian character who is currently speaking Malaysian English. She is a 40-something beautician who is trying to get a divorce during the pandemic, in playwright Leow Puay Tin's latest play 'Material Woman in the Beauty'. At the kenduri, you'll be sampling freshly made Bahasa translations prepared by translators/directors Fasyali Fadzly, Yee Heng Yeh, and Taha Long with Chee Sek Thim. Spoiler alert! Guests will be roped in to help cook up some translations on the spot.

Event Schedule 
10.00am: Intro to the unusual idea of translation as a communal activity
10:30am: A meeting with Material Woman who is trying to get a divorce during the pandemic
11.00am: Communal translation of episodes from her life and work as a beautician in KL
12.30pm: Lunch (provided)
1:30pm: Script testing of freshly translated episodes
2.30pm: Communal translation of more episodes of Material Woman 
4.00pm: Tea (provided)
4.30pm: Script testing of freshly translated episodes
5.00pm: Reflections, Q&A
