<p>Life Is A Cabaret is a musical collage by long-time collaborators, singer Janet Lee and jazz ensemble WVC Jazz. Directed by award-winning thespian and director, Nell Ng; this concert will let the audience experience stories and reflections of life, love and loss told through songs and music from Janet&rsquo;s three full-length studio albums released between 2015 to 2023. Savour Janet&rsquo;s eclectic and multilingual repertoire of originals and covers in English, Chinese, French, and Malay with musical styles ranging from swing to Latin, ballads, pop-jazz to funk, presenting a tapestry of the American songbook, Shanghai Jazz favourites, old Malayan classics in a cabaret performance.<br />
Janet and WVC always aim to bridge the invisible between the stage and audience, through repertoires and storytelling that resonate with all walks of life.</p>

<p>The Permaisuri Zarith Sofiah Opera House built by one of the China&rsquo;s top 10 real estate developers &ndash; R&amp;F Group, is located in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, the Southernmost point of Eurasia. With the permission of His Majesty, The Sultan of Johor, the Opera House is honorary named after Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Permaisuri Johor. Being the first Opera House in the Southern Region, the Permaisuri Zarith Sofiah Opera House can accommodate more than 500 audiences spanning across 114,430 square feet. The launch of the Opera House also coincides with the China &ndash; Malaysia Year of Culture and Tourism in 2020 which will significantly kindle the friendship between the two countries.</p>

Permaisuri Zarith Sofiah Opera House 苏丹后查丽苏菲雅歌剧院

Janet is a multi-faceted performer with a diverse portfolio, but is most widely known as Malaysia’s Queen of Shanghai Jazz. A consummate artist known for her unique repertoire, Janet’s claim to fame is in combining the lyrical delicacy of mid-century Mandarin Pop with the romanticism of old-school American songbook show tunes in a cabaret performance.
Janet was a recipient of the Trinity College of London’s Outstanding Achiever’s Award, completing with distinction in 2004 Trinity College of London’s Performer’s Certificate. Prior to her active involvement in jazz music, Janet was classically trained by baritone Cha Seng Tiang, sopranos Cecilia Yap and Wong Kooi Lan.  Janet works closely with renowned jazz pianist and composer Tay Cher Siang in various projects and albums. She is the founding member of The Shang Sisters, a multi-lingual vocal trio. 

To date, Janet has produced three solo albums under her belt, Restless Heart (2015) and Cinnabar Rouge (2017) and Tea for Two (2023). The first two albums were accompanied by solo concerts at Damansara Performing Arts Centre to full houses and rapturous response. Tea for Two’s release is accompanied by an on-going Malaysian and international album tour.  Cinnabar Rouge was also nominated for Best Popular Evergreen Album and winner of the Best Album Cover Design category at the 2018 Malaysia PWH Music Award. 

Janet is also an avid thespian, having claimed roles in landmark stage productions as Lulu in I Have A Date With Spring, and Yin Xin in Butterfly Lovers by Dama Asia Productions, as Gingerbread Witch in Hansel & Gretel by Kuala Lumpur City Opera, and appeared in Saidah Rastam’s M! The Opera.

AJ Popshuvit, hailed from one of the most successful Rock Band in Malaysian Music Scene, is a bassist with this legendary music group. At the same time, AJ also plays bass with WVC Jazz Ensemble since 2011 and has toured many countries with the band.

Tay Cher Siang started his piano lessons learning classical music. He took up an interest in Jazz during his teenage years and began to pursue his musical journey as a jazz pianist. He received his Masters in Jazz Pedagogy under the tutelage of Dr. Miltenberger and Professor Scea.

Tay immerse himself in the education of Jazz in Malaysia and Asia, he taught at UCSI, UM, The Yamaha Music Academy and UPM. He is also teaching at his private studio, and giving master classes, jazz clinics throughout Malaysia and Asia.

As a pianist and composer, Tay has been touring extensively with his band WVC –Malaysian Jazz Ensemble, and also with a multi nationals band Unit Asia, to China, Taiwan, Macau, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, Turkey, Egypt, India, Italy, Germany, Spain, and the USA. Total of ten albums were released throughout the Years, with original compositions and arrangements. Tay is also active in producing recordings with various artists and singers in the region. He has produced 38 albums to date.

In 2016, Tay won three Kaki Seni-Cameronian Arts Awards, the most prestigious awards for Performing Arts in Malaysia, for his compositions and performances. Another nomination came in 2020, for his production of Shakespeare and Jazz concerts of which he bagged the best original composition award. He is invited to give a TedX talk at the prestigious 2018 TedX Petaling Street, and then perform with his band at the said event. In 2023, Tay was invited to be the Artist-in-Residence at the UCSi Music Department. Tay is also the music director and arranger for various notable Singers and musical acts in the Malaysian live music scene.

As a composer and music director, Tay has been involved with movie soundtracks, Musical productions, and Theater works. He and his band played themselves in the Hollywood blockbuster “Crazy Rich Asians”. 

Tay is currently the Chairman of the organizing committee of the annual Malaysian Jazz Piano Festivals. He also writes a bi-weekly Jazz Column on newspaper China Press and Sinchew Daily,, and he hosts a weekly Jazz radio program on City Plus FM. Tay has also curated music programs for live music venues such as The Venue, Royal Selangor and Titi Jazz & Music.

Cher Siang Tay

Farid Izwan Bin Muhibbuddin was born on the 19th March 1992 at Klang, Selangor State, and started learning saxophone at the young age of 13. Admitted in the “Akademi Seni Budaya Dan Warisan Kebangsaan” (known as ASWARA) at the age of 18, he decided to pursue a professional music career and started learning clarinet with reputed Malaysian teachers and performers such as Late Mr.Hamdan Adnan(Clarinet) , Late Mr. Salvador Guerzo(Saxophone), Mr. Ahmad Shah(Saxophone) & Mr. Jari(Saxophone). He graduated from ASWARA and obtained a Diploma and Degree certificate in music composition and arranging.

Farid is regularly invited to play for local Orchestra such as Orchestra University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and University Malaya Symphonies Orchestra (UMSO), Symphony Wind Orchestra National Symphony Orchestra (SWONSO) and Orkestra Radio Televisyen Malaysia (ORTM). Since 2016 till now, he working full time as musician / music arranger/ music educator /cultural officer at Faculty Creative and Art, University Malaya.

Farid’s eclectic musical experiences, combined with a strong motivation and serious work ethic make him one of Malaysia’s very promising saxophonist, clarinetist, flutist, music educator and music arranger.

Adriel is a drummer hailing from Malaysia. His journey as a musician began at home with music lessons from his mother. Growing up, he would be part of many musical related activities. From playing in church to interschool band competitions to music festivals. He graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2018 with a Bachelors in music. Being an alumnus of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Adriel has received training and exposure to both classical and contemporary orchestral music as well. Based in Kuala Lumpur, he actively pursues his fulltime music career by engaging in projects with musicians locally and abroad, mostly as a jazz drummer. He is currently the drummer for WVC Jazz Ensemble, Kangkung Belacan, The Frozen Mugs and The Shang Sisters. Some notable local Malaysian as well as international artists Adriel has had the pleasure of working with include Tay Cher Siang, Michael Veerapan, Yuna, Lenny Ooi, Janet Lee, Winnie Ho, Gabrielle Stravelli, Patrick O’Leary, Yuki Arimasa, Chi-Pin Hsieh, Kai-Ya Chang, Seiichi Fukuyama, Eddin Khoo and AJ ‘popshuvit’.
