Love in Georgetown City is a collection of ten raunchy, heart-warming and thought- provoking tales featuring one night stands, unconventional sex therapy, sexless marriage, office fling, extra-marital affairs, teen pregnancy, paedophilia, decadence of the youth, and mixed race relationships in a hypocritical society.

Written, directed and produced by Fa Abdul, well-known for her opinion pieces in Malaysiakini, The Malaysian Insight and Free Malaysia Today, Love in Georgetown City is a reflection of Fa's charm, sarcastic and honest nail-on-the-head style of writing. Fa believes theater is a collective act of sharing stories by reflecting our experience of life, enabling others to value and learn from each other – this, as she puts it, is what makes us human. And Love in Georgetown City does just that.

So do come spend some time with Fa and her amazing cast comprising of Sharmila Kana, Aloyah Bakar, Ivan Gabriel, Karam Tabba, Tan Seoh Chin, Sharifah Sarah, Tasnim Hasina and Kabilan Murali Dharan to spread some love and laughter!

Nine out of ten plays is in English. For non-English play, subtitles will be available.

Protest against Sex in Georgetown City

When Fa Abdul presented her blockbuster show Tales from the Bedroom for the first time to her Penang audience back in February 2018, someone in the audience gasped “Wah! The King sized bed is sooo big one arrr...”

A year later, Fa decided to stop peeking at Malaysian bedroom antics and began looking into relationship dynamics among different layers of communities in George Town which gave birth to Sex in Georgetown City. Unfortunately, not everyone in town were pleased with the title. Apparently in Malaysia, the word SEX is still a taboo.

After series of threats and lashes in the media, the authorities who viewed the content of the show advised for a change of title. This was how Love in Georgetown City was born. Sadly, it failed to stop the protests and had to be shutdown after opening night.

Love in Georgetown City was then put to rest for 2 months before hitting the stage once again as Rebound.

Reviews

Love in Georgetown City

"Theatre has grown up in little Penang. It's is no longer confined to literature or, great plays that culturally Malaysians don’t quite “get it”. Neither is it all things Chinese and of course in Mandarin. I’m so glad that Penangites finally gets to experience Fa Abdul’s take on Malaysian theatre. Did I like it? Absolutely YES. This to me is the Malaysian theatre at its rib-tickling best."

- Doris Lim from smartdory.com

“We are big fans of Fa Abdul, who describes herself as a “storyteller, producer, director, playwright, scriptwriter, columnist, media trainer, facebooker and a loner.” Her deeply insightful commentaries about the Malaysian psyche are what make her now long-running “Tales” series of plays so funny and yet so thought-provoking at the same time."
