Meticulously observed by a patient camera in a small, yet sensitive story, an ordinary nine-year-old Chinese school girl is cautiously introduced to a world she had not imagined before.

Like many girls her age, she attends classes, worries about not having enough money to buy bread, among other things. She has not seen her mother for a week, leaving her lost and helpless. Sensing her distress, her library teacher offers comfort and a much-needed distraction in the form of a colourful cake. He walks her to the school library and then to the science room, where he asks her to take off her dress.

The girl is puzzled.
