Dead water occurs when a layer of fresh water rests on top of the denser salt water. Ships traveling through dead water conditions are slowed down almost to a standstill, no matter how fast they try to move. As humans, when we are in a state of consciousness where being alive feels quite the opposite, our body is alive like the ship, yet our minds have come to a stall, almost numb, like dead water. When this happens, we ask the questions, how do we carry on? Does it get better? How does it get better?

About Dead Water
Ships traveling through dead water conditions are slowed down almost to a standstill, no matter how fast they try to move. As humans, when we are in a state of consciousness where being alive feels quite the opposite, our body is alive like the ship, yet our minds have come to a stall, almost numb, like dead water. When this happens, we ask the questions, how do we carry on? Does it get better? How does it get better?
This theatre film explores the sense of disconnect between the mind, body, and the external world - almost like having a sense of being elsewhere. Elsewhere in a place where reality is not grounded and time isn’t a straight, predictable line, but is more like a knotted ribbon.
Filmed outdoors at the lawn of The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac), Dead Water is a multidisciplinary collaborative piece that includes Chloe Tan (dance artist), Ho Lee Ching (theatre artist), Tung Jit Yang (theatre artist), Francoe (music duo), Ravin P (videographer), and Yusman Mokhtar (scenographer/ art director).
Dead Water is initiated by The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat, The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac), and Hermana Collective, supported by CENDANA, MyCreative Ventures, PENJANA.

Presenter Bio
The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat
Since its inception in 1989, The Actors Studio has been presenting groundbreaking theatre in Malaysia. In 2006, it created The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat arm to bridge the gap between the arts and the people in line with the National Arts and Culture Department’s efforts to ‘merakyatkan seni’. The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat’s inaugural project was Alfian Sa’at’s “Anak Bulan di Kampong Wa’ Hassan” which toured to five villages in Peninsular Malaysia. Since then, it has re-staged many classics such as “Philadelphia, Here I Come!”, “Uda dan Dara” and “Rashomon”. It has also revived interest in traditional art forms through productions like “A Night of Cantonese Opera” and “Mak Yong Titis Sakti”. The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat has also been a key driver behind the development of new content. It has premiered works such as “The Taste of Water”, “Kandang” (based on George Orwell’s Animal Farm), a BM version of Harold Pinter’s “Betrayal” and “Dato’ Seri” (based on Macbeth). In addition to on-going series like “Don’t Let…” and “Dancebox” to promote new content, it also initiated The New Play Project for emerging playwrights. In 2016, it mounted a year-long Shakespeare 400 season. Two productions “Shakespeare Goes Bollywood” and “Richard III” was named the “Best of 2016” by the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards. Richard III won 6 other awards. The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat continues to bring quality and accessible theatre with a strongly Malaysian voice. The Actors Studio just celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2019.
Hermana Collective Bio
Hermana Collective is a new experimental multidisciplinary collective that champions fluidity in our practices. Formed by artists Chloe Tan and Ho Lee Ching, Hermana rejects strict labelling that puts us in a singular position. Constantly searching humanity, Hermana works with the body, movement and dance, text, theatrical techniques, painting, and anything and everything. We become a channel for narratives, rituals, objects, and visions that unite us.
